ONWARD INTO 2008 - LIKE A PORKCHOP INTO A GARBAGE DISPOSAL February 29, 2008
Columbus, OH - Yours truly writing this latest entry on Rottface.com. I do this because I have no idea where the Rottface News reporters have fled to - but the shack that they live and work in is empty but for a note which was mainly swear words and threats.
I didn't recap 2007 with a proper summary of the years happenings in my studio and in the real world (that is to say, the real world of gaming illustration). I'll be brief:
2007 saw the release of three book covers, a three box set of D&D miniatures which i did the artwork for, the long-awaited LORWYN Magic set which I not only did conceptual work on but numerous card art as well, the box art for the World of Warcraft Holiday set, a smattering of books with some of my interior art sprinkled in, and my first appearance in the fantasy illustratio annual SPECTRUM. I was the guest artist at two Magic:the Gathering events including the Lorwyn prerelease here in Columbus - And lastly, I made my annual appearance at GenCon and was honored with the "Best in Show" award.
What is in store for this year? The answer is already: LOTS! Since we're already well into the year, let me recap what has already happened in 2008:
The next release for Magic:the Gathering was Morningtide which, like Lorwyn, I had my hands in the cookie dough on. I was the guest artist at the Orlando Morningtide prerelease and got to talk with and sign cards for many fans.
And the last 3.5E Eberron book came out: City of Stormreach which I was lucky enough to get called upon to paint (probably because Wayne Reynolds had better things to do!).
While that was going on, I was hard at work on illustrations for D&D 4E - namely the Player's Handbook and Monster Manual - as well as more Warcraft and Magic paintings that probably won't be seen for many months.
Projecting forward, I am just now starting work on a series of Pathfinder covers and if you haven't seen Wayne Reynolds' Pathfinder covers, you should check it out. As usual, I have huge shoes to fill.
The next Magic set release will be Shadowfall which I did a little bit o' concept work on as well as plenty of card art for. No word on if I will be signing at any prereleases yet but, should i get invited, I probably will.
I will be going to GenCon in Indianapolis once again this August where I will be one of the judges for the 2008 Art Show Awards. Oh, and I'll also have my usual set up with my usual pile of stuff for sale.
The biggie this year (at least so far) is a convention in November that I was invited to attend. It is called "IlluxCon" and will be held in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The convention is all about fantasy art and fantasy artists. Lots of sensational artists are going to be there - and when i say that, I mean a very intimidating amount of artists and TALENT. Amidst the top-shelfers that will be there, I will most assuredly look like the amateur turdbag that got in by accident because of some office error. Never-the-less, I will go and eat a truck full of humble pie and try my hardest to absorb some skills and leave feeling inspired. For more info, check out the website: www.illuxcon.com
So there you have it. that's a lot to already have marked on the calender - and I always get more things tossed my way over the course of the year so keep yer ears and eyes open, people.
Hope 2008 is doing well for you all. Until next time, I better get back to painting fearsome monsters.
